Emma (Armour) Bankhead Obituary
October 16, 1922 - December 22, 2017 Emma Armour left this world to join her heavenly Father on Friday, December 22. She passed away in peace at Cedars Sinai Medical Center with her daughter and son-in-law at her side. She was born in Hernando, Mississippi, to Nancy Veasey and King Armour. She was baptised as a Christian and remained a faithful servant to God her entire life. Emma married Leon Bankhead on November 11, 1948. They had one child, Merdice Bankhead Ellis. She worked as a Dietetic Supervisor at the Veterans Administration Hospitals and retired with distinction after 36 years of service. Emma spent her retirement years dedicating herself to her family, spending much of her time shuttling her two granddaughters to and from school and supporting them in every activity throughout their young lives. She was widowed in 1992. She was deeply devoted to her family, those near or far, her entire life. In addition to her giving heart, she had an active mind. Emma was an avid news follower and a competitive Scrabble player for much of her retirement, challenging anyone who dared to take her on. She sought solace in the Bible and singing gospel music, and instilled in her family a deep love of God, respect for self and the importance of a good laugh being good for the soul. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Merdice and Michael Ellis, granddaughters Stephanie Ellis-Smith (Douglas Smith) and Angela Ellis, great-grandchildren Emma and Andrew Smith, brother King Armour, Jr., sister Nancy Westbrook of St. Louis, and numerous nieces, nephews and surrogate children and grandchildren.
