September 18, 1940 - June 15, 2016 A career engineer honored by the U.S. Air Defense Command at a special ceremony in 2011, succumbed to a long illness at age 75. The Pennsylvania native and decades-long California resident joined Hughes Aircraft (Raytheon) as a field engineer immediately upon graduation from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, in 1962. He went on to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering from USC and another in business administration from UCLA. During his tenure at Raytheon, Rick was recognized by the Air Force for his work on fire control systems and the MG-10 Fire Control Simulator. He was honored for achievements on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle system, the light helicopter program, and more. Rick retired from Raytheon in 1995 after 33 years of service, but returned for another eight years as a contractor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, the former Mary Pat Snyder; a son, Scott Thomas of Lawndale; two daughters, Deborah Thomas of Redondo Beach and Cheri Thomas (Mrs. Anthony Poulter) of Los Angeles; and two sisters, Valerie Delker of Lyndhurst, VA and Kathryn Dolphin of Renton, WA. A Mass of the Christian Burial is scheduled at a Catholic church, followed immediately by interment and a memorial service at a Catholic cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Rick's favorite charity, Boys Town Village, 14100 Crawford St., Boys Town, NE 68010.
