Ethel Dozoretz Fishman Obituary
1924 - 2015 Ethel Fishman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, cousin and aunt, passed away July 2, 2015 of heart failure at age 91, at her home in Oakland, CA. Ethel was born in Buffalo, NY, the third of four children of Sam and Frieda Dozoretz. Her father was an accomplished carpenter, and as the Depression worsened and work was scarce, Sam and Frieda packed the kids and belongings in the car and made the trek from New York to California. Ethel remembered that long, hot trip all her life. The family settled in Los Angeles, where Sam was able to find work in the movie studios, including MGM and 20th Century Fox. Always a good student and avid reader, Ethel skipped two grades after she and her siblings started school in LA. She met Joe Fishman when both were students at Los Angeles City College. In 1943, after Joe had enlisted in the Army Air Force, they married. Ethel joined him in Colorado and Oklahoma as he went through training. She then returned to California when he left for service in Europe. After the War, the couple lived in LA and started their family. In 1950, they moved west to the expanding community of Culver City. A new school was being built, and to ensure the children had access to books, Ethel worked long hours with other parents to establish the library at El Marino Elementary. Ethel was a homemaker and also used her impressive organizational skills at jobs in retail, in the library, and later in an optometry office. She volunteered as a long-term care ombudsman, and with the Arts Council at Cal State Northridge. She loved movies and had a deep affection for-and was a font of knowledge about-musical theater. In 1964, the family moved to Woodland Hills, CA, where Ethel lived until 2007, when she moved to Northern California to be closer to her daughter's family. Ethel is predeceased by her husband Joe, son Steve Fishman, brothers Leo and Ralph Dozoretz, sister Marion Hames, cousins Esther and Mendie Koenig, and many relatives and life-long friends. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie and son-in law Peter Lawrence, son Bill Fishman and partner Joelle Cawthon, adored grandsons Daniel and Jonathan Lawrence, her friends at Grand Lake Gardens, and many others who will miss her keen mind and sound advice. Donations in Ethel's memory may be made to the Steven Fishman Memorial Scholarship Fund, Dept. of Journalism, CSUN, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge, CA 91330-8311; or NA'AMAT USA, 16161 Ventura Blvd., Ste 101, Encino, CA 91463. A remembrance service will be held August 9 in Oakland.
