Eugene Hunt Mezger Obituary
September 28, 1959 - September 25, 2017 Hunt Mezger, age 57, died September 25 at his home in Santa Monica, CA. Hunt was born September 28, 1959 in Detroit and grew up in Lakeland, FL. He attended The Hill School, PA and Grosse Pointe South High School, MI, graduating in 1978. Hunt attended Michigan State University for a year. He moved to Santa Monica, CA in 1979, initially living with his sister Cindy and working in Marina del Rey doing boat detail. He maintained a thriving business at the marina as he attended UCLA, and graduated with a BA in business-economics in 1981. He chose to train as an electrician and joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 11, and later joined the City of Los Angeles as an electrician, from which he retired in 2012. Hunt loved reading and sharing his curiosity and knowledge in energetic discussions and debates, often holding a provocative point of view. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking in the Transverse Ranges and Sierra Nevada, bicycling, swimming, and playing tennis. He enjoyed cooking, particularly his mom's recipes. Hunt was entrepreneurial, hard working and owned and upgraded single-family homes and a small apartment complex, during his off-hours as an electrician. He was a member of The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles and ACTION Apartment Assoc. Hunt met Takae Yokoyama in 1998 in Santa Monica. She was newly arrived from Japan to study in America. Hunt offered her the use of his laundry machine so she wouldn't have to walk her clothes to the laundromat. Hunt was sensitive, kind, generous and friendly to everyone, qualities that won Takae over and they married in 2000. Although divorced in 2015, they shared their dog Yuri, which helped them remain close friends. During retirement, Hunt split his time between SoCal and Puerto Escondido, Mexico, where he took his dog, friends, and family, and met new friends. Hunt is preceded in death by his youngest sister, Ann, and parents, Eloise "Tinker" Hunt, and Eugene Mezger, MD. He is survived by his sisters, Cynthia Ramsey and Elise Weldon (Ray), niece Sara Zagarino, and 2 nephews, Nicholas and Nyle Weldon, all of Eugene, OR. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at 3:00 pm at Westside Vineyard Church in Los Angeles. Donations may be made to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter.
