Floyd Jeter Jr. Obituary
September 9, 1934 - July 28, 2017 Floyd Jeter, Jr. passed away with his family at his bedside in San Luis Obispo, CA, where he had lived since 1982. Born in Shreveport, LA , his family migrated to East Los Angeles at the beginning of WWII. Growing up in Boyle Heights, he attended Hollenbeck Jr. High and Roosevelt High School, class of 1952. He was a natural athlete who excelled in track and field events and became a highly rated high jumper. He attended ELACC where he became an All-American athlete. He represented the USA on a Goodwill Tour that included stops in England, Germany, Ireland and Scotland. Jeter was the first African-American to be given a sports scholarship to USC. Jeter worked for LAC Probation. He and his 1st wife, Virginia had a family of 6 children. In 1982 after an early retirement from Probation, Jeter and his 2nd wife, Debby, moved to SLO, where he started Jeter's Messenger Service and they raised his youngest son. Jeter very much became a part of the SLO community. Throughout his life, Jeter formed and maintained friendships, some from childhood to adulthood. In 2002, he reconnected with RHS alumni for a 50-year reunion, which continues as an annual event. He started a hugely popular newsletter for his RHS alumni. Family being of huge importance in his life, Jeter made sure to maintain relationships with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending numerous family functions, especially the annual Jeter Family Reunion, 27 years running. Jeter was one of the most unique, talented and charismatic individuals you could ever know. He leaves an amazing legacy of family, extended family and friends. He will be greatly missed! Services will be held at Queen of Heaven Mortuary, Rowland Heights, CA: August 10, viewing from 4:00-8:00 pm and funeral service, August 11, at 10:00 am.
