Forrest Burton Powell Obituary
1921 - 2015 Forrest Burton Powell Arcadia Family and friends celebrate the life of Forrest Burton Powell upon his passing. At the age of 93, Burton left the earthly trail for higher ground. Natural causes called him onward June 16, 2015, with those close to him at his side. Burton was born in Vernal, Utah in 1921. Jenny Burton and Forrest Asa Powell had two children, Burton and Virginia, and resided in Vernal as well as Southern California. Burton served in the Navy aboard the USS Anzio (CVE 57) during WWII, and upon graduation from the University of Southern California, began a 40-year career with the County of Los Angeles. His tenure as the Director of the Department of Community Services was distinguished by many progressive initiatives, which fostered hope and restoration within disadvantaged communities. Burton and his wife of 65 years, Marylou, resided most of that time in Arcadia, CA, where his yard was his sanctuary. He tended to the soil and plants with uncommon allegiance, no doubt reflecting the time he spent on his Uncle Ike's farm as a young man. He is survived by his wife, Marylou, two children, Ken Powell (Marisel Powell), Diane Powell Campbell (Mike Campbell), two grandchildren, Tenaya Campbell and Jonah Campbell, as well as his sister Virginia McGuckin her children Tom McGuckin and Kathy McGuckin and his grandnephew Justin Tedrick. He is also survived by many generations of loving nieces and nephews who cherish his influence. His family and friends will always remember and embrace his legacy of respect, goodwill, and kindness. The family is celebrating his life privately. As an avid Yosemite hiker (to the top of Half Dome 10 times!), one would not be surprised to hear him invoke John Muir's musing, "The mountains are calling and I must go." Donations in Burt's memory may be made to the Yosemite Conservancy,101 Montgomery Street, Su 1700, San Francisco CA 92104, 1-800-469-7275, (https://secure.yosemiteconservancy.org/donate/memorial.cfm
