June 24, 1949 - February 1, 2016 Bearing hearts weighted with sadness, his sisters, Lynn McNairy and Michele Hansen, announce Mike's passing of natural causes in his sleep on February 1 in Glendale. Mike was born in San Marino of parents Lewis Fort Etter and Patricia Michele Etter. Mike's grandfather, William Kirby Etter, having relocated to Los Angeles from Chicago to fulfill his duties as vice-president of operations for the Sante Fe railroad in 1910. Mike's parents, both natives of Los Angeles, moved to San Marino in 1942 when Fort, returning from an engineering job in Kansas City, began work as an executive with newly formed Preco Corporation. Mike graduated from San Marino High School, class of 1967, where he played varsity tennis. He attended USC and belonged to and was president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Following a brief career in commercial real estate in Los Angeles, Mike joined his father in the business of railroad equipment manufacturing at Wells Railroad Equipment Co. in South Pasadena. Together they moved the company to Azusa where Mike continued operations after Fort's retirement. He was the cherished friend of a diverse group of contemporaries as well as the favored uncle to Ryan & Sean McNairy and Dreux & Loren Hansen. Traveled and well-informed, Mike was the sought after guest for many a social settings. He was a longtime member of The Bachelors. Never presumptuous, he returned favors and gave heart felt support to numerous causes including the S.P.C.A. His family cherishes the many wonderful memories joining their lives together. A celebration of life for family and friends will take place in the Spring. Farewell dear Mike, our one wish is that we could have told you once more how much you meant to us before leaving.
