Fredericke P. "Fred" Carpenter Obituary
March 17, 1938 - February 3, 2018 Fredericke "Fred" Peter Carpenter, 79, of Reno, Nevada, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018, after an honorable fight with cancer. Fred was born on St. Patrick's Day in 1938 to Joe and Patricia Carpenter, in Sacramento, Calif. Fred was a standout student and athlete at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif., and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2012. He signed with the New York Yankees in 1956, and had a seven-year career in the Yankee organization, including an All Star season with Greensboro in 1960. During that time he served in the Special Services division of the Army as a medic and machine gunner. In 1963, he married Ellen Marie Zalusky, and over the next 20 years together, raised four children. In 1984, Ellen passed away from cancer. Fred found love again with Nan Bush and they married in 1986. They semi-retired to Reno, Nevada, and stayed busy in insurance and real estate. Fred and Nan became active members in the Reno Unity Center where they led monthly groups to serve meals for those in need at St. Vincent's Dining Room. Fred was passionate about sports and coached and supported his kids through high school and college sports. In his last decade of life, he worked at the University of Nevada, Reno athletics department for the football, basketball and baseball programs. Fred is survived by Nan, his loving wife; Maggie, his faithful dog; six children and 13 grandchildren: son Mike (Carter) and his children Austin, Taylor and Kendall; son John (Wendy) and their children Daniel and Megan; stepson Ken (Dawn) and their children Jack and Kaila, daughter Kristin (Jared Ogden) and their children Tobin and Isabella; stepdaughter Kira (Derek Eggers) and their children Grant and Dean; son Matthew (Melanie) and their children Vincent and Madeleine. Fred was predeceased by his first wife Ellen (1984) and his brother Joseph (1981).
