He was born June 9, 1939 in Picher, Oklahoma to Roy Davis Johnson and Marcell Imogene Smith Johnson. The family moved to the Westchester area of Los Angeles, CA in the 1940's where Gary distinguished himself as an athlete at Westchester High School. Gary signed a contract to play minor league baseball with the Chicago Cubs in 1959 and played for four years. After leaving baseball, he attended UCLA graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1964. Upon graduation, Gary began working for Arthur Young & Co., an international accounting firm, in their Los Angeles Office.
