George F. McGinnis Obituary
November 19, 1929 - April 4, 2017 George Forsythe McGinnis passed away on April 4, 2017, at the age of 87. He was born on November 19, 1929 in Greenville, PA to Isabel and James Reed McGinnis, the fifth of six children. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1955. After graduating from Thiel College, he pursued his dream of attending the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles (now in Pasadena, CA). Part way through he dropped out and took a job at the Los Angeles Dept. of Water and Power. Ten years later he decided it was time to return to the Art Center. He completed his degree with a B.S. in Product Design and graduated, with honors, on May 27, l966. For his senior project George designed a working model of a high-speed transportation system. The then-president of the Art Center invited Walt Disney to see George's model. The result was an invitation to become a Disney Imagineer. George was the last Imagineer hired by Walt, six months before Walt's death. George worked at WED (later renamed WDI) as an Industrial Designer for 30 years, designing such rides as Space Mountain, monorails and the Horizons Pavilion in Florida. After George retired, Rick Caruso hired him to design two trolleys for the Americana in Glendale, and The Grove in Los Angeles. George was a longtime member of Glendale Presbyterian Church. For many years he donated his time to creating art projects for the Preschool at Grandview Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his brother Robert (Millie), wife Marilyn, daughter Shana, sons Reed (Megan), and Scott (Sonday), grandchildren Jonathan, Elise, and a third grandchild due this month, and his 15 nieces and nephews. George was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and a kind and generous man. A memorial service will be held at Glendale Presbyterian Church, 125 S. Louise, Glendale 91205, on Saturday, April 22, 2017, 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
