George James Andrews Obituary
March 1, 1927 - January 28, 2017 George J. Andrews passed away at age 89 from congestive heart failure. He was born in Chicago, the only child of James and Veneta Andrews. He attended Senn High School and after service in the Navy during WWII, graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science followed by a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He married Cleo Apostol in 1953 and within a few years moved to Los Angeles, where he worked in the aerospace industry contributing to the manned spaceflight projects and later to communication satellites. He retired in 1991, finishing his career as a Senior Scientist at Hughes Aircraft Co. and Program Manager at Aerospace Corp. Besides his cherished family man status, he enjoyed photography, sailing, and woodworking; he had a general and air conditioning contractor's license and helped friends with their home construction projects; he was also a founding member of the Hellenic University Club. George is survived by his wife, Cleo, children James (Nikki) Andrews, MD, Mary (Michael) Pappas, Susan (Clayton) Seger, and Stephen (Emily) Andrews, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. George's warmth and exuberance will be greatly missed by his beloved family and friends. Trisagion service will be held on February 5, 2017 at 7:30 pm and funeral service on February 6, 2017 at 11:00 am, both at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1324 S. Normandie Ave., Los Angeles. Memorial donations may be made to the Basil P. Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies at LMU or to the St. Sophia Philoptohos.
