Gerald F. Madigan Obituary
December 27, 1927 - July 1, 2017 Gerald F. "Jerry" Madigan was born on Dec 27, 1927 in Los Angeles, CA and passed into eternal life surrounded by his family, on July 21st, 2017, from complications after suffering a stroke. He was in his 90th year. Jerry was the only child of Gerald Nicholas and Amelia Lavigne Madigan. Growing up in Los Angeles, his primary education began at St John's Military Academy and Sacred Heart Catholic School, and he then attended Loyola High School. As an undergraduate Jerry attended Loyola University (now LMU) in Los Angeles, earning a BS in Civil Engineering and graduating in 1951. After graduation he worked at Lockheed Aircraft as a member of the design team that, among other projects, designed the landing gear systems for the C-130 Hercules aircraft. After starting his family and moving to Orange County, the next two decades found Jerry working for many of the most active commercial and residential construction companies of the day including Diverco, Kiely, WE Lyons, and WJ Burke Construction. When Madigan-Stickler Construction was formed in 1978, he realized his long term dream to start his own firm. He and partner Newell Stickler developed many commercial properties in and around the local area. Other noteworthy accomplishments include the development of a 300-unit windmill farm in the Tehachapi Mountains and later becoming a DSA Inspector for the State of California. Jerry was an avid, lifelong sailor and belonged to the Newport Harbor Yacht Club for over 50 years and was a member of the Transpac Yacht Club. He raced and cruised extensively in the local waters and internationally and was awarded many trophies including an overall win in the Transpacific Race to Honolulu in 1949 on the yacht "Kitten". Jerry raced in various one design classes over the years including the Gary 18, Falcon, Rhodes 33, PCC, California 32, International 5.5 Meter, Star, and Soling. He owned several racing/cruising boats including his current Schock 35 "Berserk". He was an active member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church devoting many Sundays to the Eucharistic Ministry. Jerry also served as a 4th Degree Knight for the Knights of Columbus. He was married to Maria Gianinni in 1956 and later to Nancy Pickell Stephens in 1989. He is survived by three children: Trish (Mike) Drummy, Gerald N. "Nick" (Maureen) and Timothy, 6 grandchildren: Michelle and Brian Drummy, Michael, Jimmy and Kate Madigan and Max Madigan and 6 step children: Laura Lindmark, Teresa Stephens, Donna Stephens, Claudia Stephens, Paula Montano and John Stephens and 11 step grandchildren: Kevin and Sarah Lindmark, Kyle Stephens, David & Dustin Dracoulis, Jessica and Everett Montano and Andrew, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Biruck Stephens. Jerry had a special place for his three grandsons currently serving on active duty in the US military including ENS Michael Madigan, US Navy, MIDN 1/C Jimmy Madigan, US Navy and 2dLt Everett Montano, US Air Force. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Jerry's memory to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (www.olmc.net) or the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation (www.nhsailingfoundation.org/donate).
