Gloria A. Flammang Obituary
September 19, 1920 - August 26, 2016 Gloria was born in Sioux City, Iowa to Olaf Hanson and Lillian Bankson. She was raised in Orleans, Nebraska, where her father managed the Farmers' Equity Cooperative Creamery Association. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1940. In 1942, she married her high-school sweetheart and love of her life, Joseph Flammang, who shortly thereafter boarded the Queen Mary to serve in the Air Force in England during World War II. During the war she worked at the library at West Point. Having seen the sunshine of Southern California during a trip to the Rose Bowl, they moved to Eagle Rock, then Sherman Oaks, and finally Encino. They raised three children, Richard Alan Flammang (who died in 2002), Janet Angela Flammang, and Barbara Hanson Flammang. Gloria instilled in her children, and in her grandchildren Anne Flammang Killefer, Joe Killefer, Alexander Flammang Friedman, and Jacob Flammang Friedman, an extraordinary curiosity about every imaginable topic and a love of life and beauty. Her oil paintings decorated the family home and her annual Christmas festivities were a Scandinavian wonderland of decorations and aquavit "skols." Her husband Joseph died in 1987 and she is survived by her two daughters, four grandchildren, granddaughter-in-law Jen Killefer, and two sons-in-law: Wade Killefer and Lee Friedman. They all thank Gloria for her spunk and boundless love, which they hope will continue in their own lives as an honor to her memory. Private funeral services are pending. Donations may be made to the ALS Association.
