Gloria Mary Webster Obituary
November 14, 1927 - December 24, 2016 Distinguished educator and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, relative and friend, Gloria Webster passed away peacefully on December 24, 2016, Christmas Eve morning. She was a dynamic and engaging woman with extraordinary leadership abilities that brightened the lives of all of those she touched. Gloria was born November 14, 1927 in Los Angeles, California to Nikola and Mary Ragus. After graduating from Belmont High School, she received a BA and MA in Physical Education with a concentration in Dance from UCLA. She spent the next two memorable years teaching Modern Dance at the University of Texas in Austin then returned home to Los Angeles where she taught Physical Education at Mount St. Mary's College. Gloria then began a remarkable career in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Her first assignment was as an English, Modern Dance, and Physical Education teacher at Lincoln High School where she also oversaw the cheerleaders and drill team. She always spoke fondly of and had a special place in her heart for her fellow teachers and students at Lincoln. Gloria became registrar at Lincoln and then was assigned to Nightingale Junior High as assistant principal, Marshall High School as assistant principal, and finished her career as principal at Eagle Rock High School. She was president of the LAUSD Principals Association and was the first woman from Southern California to be appointed to the California Interscholastic Federation's Federated Council, the governing body of CIF. After retiring from LAUSD, Gloria had a wonderful time celebrating her Croatian heritage by serving for many years as President of the Seniors Club at St. Anthony Croatian Catholic Church in downtown Los Angeles, not far from where she grew up on Coronado Street. Gloria is survived by the love of her life and husband of 64 years, Joseph Webster, her son Stephen Webster, daughter-in-law Dr. Karen Simpson Webster, and grandson Nicholas Webster. A rosary will be held for Gloria on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Cabot and Sons, 27 Chestnut St., Pasadena, at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at St. Anthony Croatian Catholic Church, 712 N. Grand, Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Gloria Webster's name to Holy Angels Catholic Church in Arcadia, California (www.holyangelsarcadia.org).
