Harold F. Retzow Obituary
March 25, 1926 - January 13, 2016 Harold Retzow, 89 years old, passed away peacefully the morning of January 13 at Autumn Hills Rehabilitation Hospital in Glendale from complications of a fractured hip. Hal was born in Winlock, WA. He was the son of Fredrick Ernst Richard Retzow & Emma Helene Retzow, immigrants from post WW1 Germany. Hal's family moved southward. He graduated from Berendo Junior High, in Los Angeles, & John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, in Sun Valley CA. Hal had a great aptitude for mechanics & science which he used throughout his life. Hal served as an electrician in the Navy during WW2. His time was spent on the USS Iowa in the a Pacific. He became active in USS Iowa alumni association. He drove all over the U S to attend the annual crew reunions. You could always find Hal wearing his USS Iowa cap. He carved himself a career with the Telephone Co. He specialized in the teletype machine. He owned a bar in Hollywood too. He claimed that the bar was known for his homemade food. He always had time to help a neighbor or friend. One of his navy buddies said that "he did it his way." He had a home in Palm Springs that his family & friends all remember as a fun get-away. He eventually retired to Palm Springs. He liked to cook soup & bake, & build whatever was needed. He shared his good food with his neighbors & friends. He enjoyed restoring Model A Ford car. He was active in a Model A club, the Desert Rattlers. Hal was an intelligent and foremost, an ingenious man who always found time to give a helping hand. He made a difference & will be missed by all. A memorial service is scheduled on February 22, at 12:45pm at the Riverside VA Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside.
