Hattie Gable Obituary
February 23, 1927 - January 15, 2017 Harriett "Hattie" Elizabeth (Shanks) Gable, passed away on January 15, 2017 after a hard-fought battle with COPD at age 89 years old. She died peacefully, surrounded by her family, in San Pedro, CA. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Samual L. and Elsie (Kennard) Shanks, Hattie attended Westminster College in Pennsylvania. In 1949 she married William "Bill" Gable. While continuing to raise her two sons Stephen and James, Hattie returned to college to earn both a Bachelor and Master's degrees in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 1968, the family relocated to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA. Occupationally, Hattie was co-owner of a car leasing and an equipment leasing company and an account representative with Investors Diversified Services (IDS). She was active in local political and community causes, the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association, and also numerous charities, many of them benefiting humane treatment of animals. Hattie loved food, music, movies, Manhattans, and traveling the world. She was passionate about what she believed, and she was unfettered in voicing her point of view. Full of enthusiasm (spunk), she believed whole-heartedly in Johnny Mathis and brutal honesty. She was a lively person and said that she was one day looking forward to meeting the Lord, in all of Her Glorious Splendor. Hattie had a twinkle in her eye, attributable to her very developed sense of humor. She loved to laugh with you, and never at you. Underneath that merriment was immense joy of living life on life's terms, with genuine empathy and compassion for her family and friends. Hattie Gable exhibited kindness, humor and gratitude up until her very last days on Earth, and toward the end; in a stoic way that will always serve our memory of her as a woman of spiritual substance and courage. Hattie was predeceased by beloved husband Bill and her brother, Lester Shanks. She is survived by two sons: Steve Gable and his wife Dawn of Mesa, Arizona, and Jim Gable and his wife Ann of Ukiah, California; her sister-in-law, Eunice Shanks of Baltimore, MD, as well as many nieces and nephews. A private service is being planned. For further information please call 310-979-4333.
