Helen Gropman Obituary
December 20, 1921 - January 28, 2016 Helen Gropman was born in Chicago on December 20, 1921, to Bessie and Louis Feldman. Their first child, she was a pretty, dark-haired girl, full of life, easily making friends. At the age of 17 she gained a baby brother, Erwin, to whom she was a devoted sister. Following a year of college Helen had to leave school to begin working and contributing to the family finances. At the age of 25, with her father's small business on Maxwell Street becoming more profitable, Helen moved to Los Angeles. She found work and one evening went to a dance where she met a tall, skinny serviceman by the name of Paul Gropman. She introduced herself as "Mrs. Nusbaum" (a character from the Fred Allen radio show). They danced, he fell for her, and within a year's time they were married. Four children, all boys, followed, as Helen and Paul worked hard at making a living and raising a family. They were very social, with lots of friends and a home that was open to all. Helen worked part time jobs as an accountant, raised her boys, and made all the holiday meals for a large extended family, attracting everyone by her warmth and humor, wisdom and kindness. She was smart enough to have had a professional career, but her great purpose in life was to give love. In old age a long, gradually progressing dementia overtook her, but up to the very end her essential warmth, humor, and goodness peeked through the dark clouds of illness and she continued making friends with all who came in contact with her. Helen passed away the morning of Thursday, January 28, at the Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda, California. She was 94 years old. Going before her wereher mother and father, and her husband who had adored her. She is survived by her loving children, Charles (Nan), Ted (Barna), David (Karen) and Saul; grandchildren, Louis, Elizabeth, Jessica, Jonathan, Yale, Hannah and Dorothé; great-grandchildren,Raaka Raja and Leah; brother, Erwin Feldman;sister-in-law, Lynn Feldman; and nieces Lori, Robin and Dani.Graveside services were held Monday, January 28, at Eden Memorial Cemetery in the San Fernando Valley. We all miss her so very much.
