Helen James Long Obituary
May 3, 1915 - August 19, 2016 August 19, 2016, marked the end of a 101 year lifetime for a grande dame, Helen James Long. She passed away at her home with her devoted caregiver, Celinda (Sally) Gaeta, by her side. Born on May 3, 1915 in Connecticut, she was an only child adopted into a prominent Chicago family. Her personal drive led her to attend the University of Southern California during the Great Depression, choosing to major in liberal arts. There she met her husband of 67 years, Harry George Long, and initiated her role as doyenne by serving as the President of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Living in Brentwood for over 30 years, she was Past President of The National Charity League, a member of The Beverly Club, the Old California Golf Club in Cheviot Hills, The Beach Club, and Bel Air Country Club. Later retiring to Newport Beach and Indian Wells, she and her husband were members of the Balboa Bay Club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, and Desert Horizons Country Club in Indian Wells until his death in 2008. As matriarch of the family she was an astute manager and investor. Helen was a disciplined woman who admired excellence in people and performances. She was an avid golfer and played through her 86th year. A favorite pastime was bridge, which she played several times weekly until her death. She especially loved playing poker at Agua Caliente Casino with her men. She also followed tennis, golf, and baseball; at age 101 she even knew the salaries of her Dodgers. Her legacy continues with her daughter Lucinda and her son Harry, Jr., and their respective families. She will be remembered as the World's Greatest Backseat Driver.
