August 1, 1917 - April 26, 2016 Beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Born in Cincinnati, OH to Rudolph and Emma Wehking, she attended Withrow High School and the University of Cincinnati graduating in 1939 with a degree in liberal studies. She worked for the Cincinnati school district as a home visitor until enlisting in the Women's Army Air Corps in 1943. She rose to the rank of 1st lieutenant as company commander of the Newark, NJ Air Transport Command. She returned to Cincinnati in 1946, earned her teaching credential from UC and taught elementary school until 1952 when she joined the State Dept. and was sent to the US Embassy in Warsaw, Poland. There she met Ivar Skovseth (stationed at the Norwegian Embassy), and they resigned their posts in 1954 and went to Norway where they were married. They returned to the US and eventually joined her parents and sister in Downey, CA where they raised their sons Jon and Christian. She worked as a nursery school teacher, teacher's aide, in polling booths and the registrar's office at Rio Hondo College. She also devoted time for numerous charitable causes, of which earned her many accolades such as the Volunteer of the Year Award from AAUW, 50 year service award from Downey United Methodist Church in 2007 and a certificate of special recognition from Congress in 2008. After Ivar's retirement they moved to Oceanside for 10 years then returned to Downey until 2012 when she moved to Fullerton. She was a kind, generous, compassionate and humorous soul whose spirit will be dearly missed by all especially her family, Jon, Denise, granddaughter Jennifer and grandson Erik, extended grandchildren Jonathan and Jacqueline Urbanus and families NIsser and Mortensen. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 29, 2016 at 1100 at Downey United Methodist Church, 10801 Downey Ave., Downey, CA 90241.
