Henry J. Merkle

Obituary Condolences

Henry, the only child of Henry J. Merkle and Margaret Johnson, was born in Santa Monica and spent his youth in the Los Angeles area. After graduating from Alexander Hamilton High School in 1951, Henry served his country in the US Marine Corps from 1951-1954 aboard the USS Boxer. Forever after, attending Marine reunions and keeping up with his fellow Marines remained an important part of Henry's life. Following his term of service, Henry furthered his education at Los Angeles State College (1958) and Claremont Graduate School (1960).
For 30 years, Henry taught various subjects at Palmdale High and English at Antelope Valley Community College. Upon his retirement in 1992, he volunteered at the Pasadena Senior Center and the ENCORE program at Glendale Community College. He was also an active Andrus volunteer at the USC Davis School of Gerontology and a member of the Glendale Democrats.
Henry and Barbara were married in 1986, each bringing adult children into the family. During their life together they enjoyed traveling the world and attending lectures, operas and plays. Both attended performances and other activities of the Opera League of Los Angeles, the Opera Buffs, the Metropolitan Associates and the Western Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. At every event Henry had his camera and became the unofficial photographer of friends and strangers alike, following through by mailing copies to everyone.
Henry is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Scott (Linda) and Greg, grandson Nate and step-daughter Lisa White. His daughter-in-law Donna preceded him in death.
He will be remembered as a proud Marine, a devoted teacher, a loving husband and father, and a gentleman always.
Remembrance and burial September 1, 2015 at Los Angeles National Cemetery.
