Herbert Warren Kalmbach Obituary
Herbert Warren Kalmbach was born on October 19, 1921, in Port Huron, MI, and passed away on September 15, 2017, in Newport Beach, CA. He was a man of exceptional intelligence, warmth, wit and genuine curiosity. Herb was always proud that at the age of 14 he invented an airplane de-icer, details of which were published in Popular Mechanics. Herb served as a Navy pilot during World War II. After five years in the Navy, Herb taught celestial navigation at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Herb was an alumnus of the University of Southern California, earning his degree in 1949, and was student body president during his senior year. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He earned his J.D. at USC in 1951. Herb and his young family moved from Pasadena to Newport Beach in 1955. He was Chairman of Bank of Newport, President and director of Arizona Title Insurance and Trust Co., Vice-President and director of Security Title Insurance Co., Director and general counsel of Macco Realty Co., and Director of the 552 Club of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. He founded the law firm, Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth with offices in Los Angeles and Newport Beach and was the personal attorney of President Richard Nixon. More recently, he was of counsel to the law firm of Baker + Hostetler. Herb was a charter member of Big Canyon Country Club, founding member of the Pacific Club and a member of the American Legion Post 282 in Newport Beach. He was also a former member of the California Club, the Los Angeles Country Club, El Dorado Country Club and was an honorary governor of the Balboa Bay Club. Herb is survived by his daughter Lauren Kinsey (Gerry) of Newport Beach, his son Kurt Kalmbach (Barbara) of Coto de Caza and their families. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara in 2005 and his son Kenneth in 1980.
