Hsiang "Sam" Tseng Obituary
December 24, 1928 - February 27, 2016 Hsiang "Sam" Tseng was born in the city of Nanchang in the province of Jiangxi, China. Shortly after birth, his family moved to Shanghai where he lived for 20 mostly war-torn years attending Nanyang Mofan Middle School followed by Jiaotung University. In the early 1950's, Sam made his way to California where he studied in the Caltech University lab of Linus Pauling, who was notably the only person ever to win two unshared Nobel prizes in his lifetime. Sam lived very near to the Caltech campus when he passed away peacefully on February 27th after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and prostate cancer. His wife Annie Jue Tseng and children Lisa, Ling, Wesley and Robert Tseng as well as Robert's three children in Hong Kong, Jessica, Desmond, and Steven, and one great-grandson, Asten, survive him. Sam travelled the world extensively throughout his lengthy import - export career, but he was most happy coming home to watch the evening sunset over the Pacific Ocean from his balcony in Rancho Palos Verdes where he and his wife Ann lived for nearly 40 years. Whether wandering the halls of the Ocean Terrace or the streets of Taipei, Sam was always making friends and helping strangers whenever and wherever possible. He will be forever remembered fondly as a great bon vivant and colourful raconteur with a warm smile and twinkling eyes.
