December 23, 1918 - February 23, 2016 Hugh Conly Shurtleff, age 97, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2016 at his home in Dana Point, California. Hugh was born on December 23, 1918 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas to his parents, Hugh Burk and Susan Ethyl (McDonough) Shurtleff. He earned a scholarship to Texas A & M where he graduated with a BS in 1941. Hugh served as a naval officer during World War II and was awarded two stars for his service as Commanding Officer of a Submarine Chaser in the Mediterranean and one star for his service in the Pacific. Hugh married Elsie Lucille (Marburger) Shurtleff in 1943 and they remained partners until Elsie's death in 1983. His early career was primarily in the trucking industry where he held various positions with Transcon Lines from 1945-1972, earned his license as a CPA, and served as an officer of the American Trucking Association. He was President and CEO of Ringsby Truck Lines for eight years, President of T.I.M.E. - DC, a nationwide trucking firm. In 1983, Hugh became President and CEO of LLC Corporation, a holding company with diverse operations. In 1986, he became Chairman of the Board of Sybra, Inc., which operated over 100 Arby's Restaurants. Hugh's hobbies included golf, bridge & gardening. Hugh is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 31 years, Marion (Lewis) Shurtleff, who brought Hugh immense happiness, his two sons, Douglas and Mark, daughters-in-law, Heidi and Nancy and grandchildren. A casual Celebration of Hugh's life followed by a luncheon reception will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at The Fountains at Sea Bluffs, 25411 Sea Bluffs Drive, Dana Point, California. A reception will follow.
