Idele Stapholtz Obituary
August 13, 1926 - January 22, 2018 The beloved matriarch of her family and child survivor of the Holocaust, Idele peacefully passed away the afternoon of January 22, 2018 while surrounded by family. Born in Chemnitz, Germany, Idele was orphaned as a young girl. Shortly after Kristallnacht she was placed on a Kindertransport to Belgium and was adopted by a Roman Catholic family, Germaine and Marie Goosens, who risked their lives to protect a young Jewish girl from harm. Idele has a permanent display at the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum, celebrating these righteous women. They raised Idele as their own, insisting she retain her Jewish identity, and sent her after the war to New York to meet family and to attend college where she met Ben, the love of her life, to whom she was married over 50 years until Ben's passing in 2007. After retiring from LAUSD Idele began writing and speaking publicly about her childhood experience in Nazi-occupied Europe and of those who successfully hid her in plain sight. Her brilliant blue eyes and loving smile will be celebrated as gifts by all who knew her. Idele is survived by daughters Yvette Lohnes (with Martin Enock) and Debbie Greene (with David Greene), grandchildren Joshua Lohnes (with Melissa Wild), Juniper Greene, Andrew Greene (with Rachel Greene) and great-grandchildren Chloe Idele, Indigo Sol, and Matthew Benjamin. Services were held at 10 AM on 1/25/2018 at Eden Memorial Park, Mission Hills, California. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation (mhopus.org) or to Vista Del Mar School (vistadelmar.org)
