Irene Greenberg Stern Obituary
May 20, 1936 - October 24, 2017 Irene Stern - loving wife, mother, grandmother and educator - passed away at 81 this week in Thousand Oaks. Irene was born in Brooklyn, NY, where she attended Erasmus Hall H.S. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Skidmore College and a Master's degree from Yeshiva University. She began teaching at Covert School in Rockville Centre, NY, in 1957¿the start of a career in education that spanned 55 years. Irene and her family moved to Los Angeles in 1973, where she became a substitute teacher, then full-time teacher and then administrator at Beverly Vista School (BV) in Beverly Hills for almost 40 years. She was a selfless, giving and passionate educator, and believed that every child had strengths and capabilities to be nurtured. When she became Assistant Principal and then Principal at BV, she channeled her energy and passion into success of the teachers¿she truly cared about them and their ability to bring out the best in children. Irene met her husband Mark in 1958, and they married in 1959. Their relationship was strong; they loved their time together but also respected each other's need for independence. Irene loved gardening and caring for her flowers. She also served on the Board of Education at her synagogue, Temple Adat Elohim, and recently started studying to become a bat mitzvah next May. And, for the past 15 years, Irene put a lot of her energy into her grandson, Colin¿she loved him very much and could barely wait for the times they got to spend together. Irene leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Mark; their son Mitch; her daughter-in-law Sandi; her grandson Colin; her brother Aaron (Felice) Greenberg; and many cousins, nieces and nephews around the country. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 29th at 12:30 p.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Simi Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the or the Lupus Foundation of America.
