Irv H. Kaplan Obituary
February 10, 1956 - January 27, 2016 "I beat to a different drum". Irv's gentle, strong character touched many lives. He loved music, photography, bad puns, good cooking, gardening, and volleyball. He liked to travel and to experience different cultures. His innately decent and unbiased nature was a perfect match for the philosophy of Pacific Oaks College in the 70s and 80s, where he spent many happy years. He was greatly influenced by his education there and by all of the wonderful people (both big and small) he met while working at the Children's School. Irv had the unique ability to respectfully and courageously confront injustice whenever he saw it. In spite of severe learning disabilities, he earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Human Development while working full-time to support himself. Irv tried to implement the Pacific Oaks' principles of respect, peaceful conflict resolution and valuing each individual throughout his 40 years teaching and advocating for children and adults. His career began at Orange Coast College Children's Center, and included Glendale Unified and Cottage Coop where he co-taught with his wife. For the past 18 years Irv enjoyed teaching and learning from his students in the Los Angeles Community College District. "Never judge that which you do not truly understand." In 1986, Irv met his soul-mate, Lisa, at Pacific Oaks. Their love survived many difficult challenges, and produced their greatest joy, Matthew. For more than 26 years, through no fault of his own, Irv endured a tragic and progressively debilitating illness. His suffering is finally over. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Vernon, and son, Matthew. Irv was beloved and will forever be missed. Per his wishes, there will be no services and his ashes will be privately scattered at sea. Please celebrate his life in any way you would like. Irv requested that donations be made to Malesurvivor.org.
