James B. Taylor Obituary
January 28, 1927 - April 26, 2016 James B. Taylor passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, from congestive heart failure at the age of 89. A native of Los Angeles, he was the last of three children born to William Horace Taylor and Louise Evangeline Taylor. A trailblazing educator, Taylor, began his career teaching mathematics, became Boys Vice Principal at John H. Francis Polytechnic High School in the San Fernando Valley and was appointed Principal of "Poly" five years later becoming the first African-American principal of a predominately white school. As the first principal of Alain Leroy Locke High School, he brought an innovative approach to public education. Taylor integrated college students and college professors into the classroom, invited daily community involvement on- and off-campus and established a tradition of proud and inspired students. Taylor rose to the position of Deputy Superintendent of the LAUSD. While serving in this role, Taylor was called upon to address the most difficult issues ever faced by urban American school districts including the racial integration of schools, the need to hire and promote women and people of color, and improve instruction quality, along with implementing magnet schools and increasing community involvement during politically turbulent times. A memorial will be held to celebrate his life and legacy on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at 6:30pm, in the Friendship Auditorium (3201 Riverside Drive, Los Angeles, 90027). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to support the James B. Taylor Charter Middle School at: greendot.org/donate.
