James Bernard Lewis Gee M.D. Obituary
March 13, 1927 - August 18, 2016 James Bernard Lewis Gee, M.D., of San Pedro, California, died peacefully on August 18, 2016 at the Caring House in Torrance, CA. He was 89. A native of England, he was educated at St. John's College, Oxford University, and earned his medical degree at Guy's Hospital Medical School in London. He came to the United States in 1961 and taught at the Universities of Wisconsin and Pittsburgh, schools of medicine, before joining the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine in 1969. There he continued his work in pulmonary and occupational lung diseases as a member of the core staff of principal investigators at Yale's Lung Research Center. As a specialist on diseases of the chest, his focus ranged from pulmonary mechanics during pregnancy to occupational lung disease and sleep apnea. He authored and coauthored numerous articles and book chapters on related issues, most importantly showing the correlation between smoking tobacco and lung diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma. He served for decades as director of the Winchester Chest Clinic and as director of the Occupational Lung Disease Clinic at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was a member or fellow of many scientific organizations including the American College of Chest Physicians, American Lung Association and the American Thoracic Society. Bernard retired from Yale in 1997, honored as Professor Emeritus of Medicine. Bernard truly enjoyed travel, witty conversation, good food and good wine along with the conviviality of friends and family. He loved to bestow his great love of classical music, opera and books to others. He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann (Peggy) of San Pedro, CA and two step-daughters, Rebecca (Larry) Harteck and grandsons Paul and Nicholas of Santa Barbara, CA and Elizabeth Orona of Solvang, CA and his three children, Christopher B. Gee of Hermosa Beach, CA, Alison Knight Gee of Santa Cruz, CA and David F. Gee of Hood River, OR, from his previous marriage to Ruth W. Squire Gee, who preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the Historic Church of St. Peter's on the grounds of Green Hills Memorial Park. Interment will be held Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Sunrise Urn Garden, Santa Barbara Cemetery, Santa Barbara CA.
