James Cornelius Sheehy

Obituary Condolences

May 23, 1923 - December 4, 2015 James Cornelius Sheehy, 92, a resident of Sun Valley, CA, passed away on December 4, 2015. James, the son of Irish immigrants, Cornelius J. and Anna M. Hanley Sheehy, was born on May 23rd, 1923 in Butte, MT. Jim, "String", Sheehy, grew up in the mining community of Butte, where he had a reputation as being a skillful boxer among his friends. He attended St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Central High School. Jim's tales of his antics as a youth rarely failed to entertain. Favorites among his childhood stories were about his family; and spirited buddies, "Spud" Murphy, "Gus" Cassidy, and "Loques" Navarro. James was inducted into the U.S. Navy in February of 1943. During WW II, he served as a radio operator on a PBY Seaplane in the Pacific. With the GI Bill, Jim earned a Bachelor's degree at the University of Colorado. He worked as a government auditor for the Department of Defense for 26 years. After retiring at age 60, Jim lived many happy years playing golf, being active as a Catholic parishioner, investing, and traveling with his late wife. As a young man, Jim was married to the mother of his two surviving children, Nancy Sheehy Handmaker, PhD of Corrales, NM; and Joseph Francis Sheehy of Albuquerque, NM. Jim was married a second time in 1970 to Antoinette, "Toni", Eichler. A dedicated husband to Toni, who is survived by her children, Carol (Michael Moore) Valcarcel of Huntington Beach, CA and John (Lynda) of Baltimore, MD, Jim helped care for her during her last years until her passing in 2002. Jim was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joseph, Thomas, and Edmund; and his sister, Sr. Mary Serena. He is survived by his brother and sister, John, "Skeff", Sheehy of Helena, MT; and Sr. Mary Eileen Sheehy of Grand Junction, CO along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by his children's spouses, Stanley Handmaker, MD, PhD; and Keely Sheehy; Joseph and Keely's children, Charlene, Megan, and James; and two great-grandchildren, Briella Farris and Dominick Herrera. Upon his death, as in life, Jim showed humor, bidding "Adios" to his children. The family wishes to express gratitude to Fr. Benny, and the parishioners of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for their prayers. Arrangements will be made, as was James' request, for an interment of his cremains at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Butte, MT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Francis Xavier Parish, Burbank, CA.
