James Crane Lewis Obituary
October 21, 1923 - January 28, 2017 James "Jim" Crane Lewis (93), passed away peacefully Saturday evening, January 28, 2017 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Jim was born on October 21, 1923 at California Lutheran Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Jim was raised by his mother Ethel May Lewis (maiden name Raw), who he honored, and grew up with his older brother and best friend, Thomas "Tommy" Musgrave Lewis. He was full of life at every age and his friends nicknamed him "Jungle Jim." Jim attended Hamilton High School and went to Santa Monica College, where he was President of the student body, before enlisting in the Navy in 1943. He attended Arizona State University and Harvard School of Business while being ranked as Ensign in the Navy. He made the rank of Lieutenant JG and he considered serving his country as an officer in the United States Navy while on the Augusta for 1 year and stationed on Guam for 3 ½ years, to be one of his greatest accomplishments. After serving in the United States Navy, Jim received a degree in Business Administration from UCLA. He then made a very successful insurance agency in Beverly Hills, CA with Charles Hart in 1948 named Hart and Lewis Insurance Agency, Inc. Jim was recognized with many awards throughout his career. In business, he was first in his class at a special insurance training course presented by The Aetna in the summer of 1952 at their home office in Hartford, Connecticut. Jim was Beverly Hills Young Man of the Year 1958 and foundational to the start of the Beverly Hills Visitors Bureau. He was also Chairman of the Beverly Hills Convention Bureau in 1961, a 30+ year member of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce and a 30+ year member of Rotary Club of Beverly Hills (Rotary Club of Beverly Hills President during a year in 1986 to 1987). He was and had been a member of The Los Angeles Country Club for more than 55 years. In addition to loving golf, Jim was a pilot and his solo flight was made out of Santa Monica, CA, Airport in 1969. In 1983, when his son James Crane Lewis, Jr. (also "Jim") joined him in business, the Beverly Hills firm was renamed Lewis and Lewis Insurance Agency, Inc. and continues to thrive to this day with grandsons James Crane Lewis, III and Jordan Anderson Lewis as its managers. Jim loved life and the people who he spent his life with. He welcomed meeting new people with his ever present enthusiasm, optimism, and dynamic positive attitude. In the late 1970's Jim accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He began a personal ministry of proclaiming the Gospel as well as assisting many ministries (The Gideon's International, Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, and Prison Ministries). He became a leader of a Bible study at the LACC as well as in one in La Quinta, CA. He has been foundational to the support of his granddaughter's FAITHCHILD ministry (http://www.faithchildministry.com/), which is a Bible based children's service every Friday night in Glendale. Every Saturday Jim would call and ask his granddaughter how many kids attended and if any had been saved. He invested his time and energy into his relationships and many referred to him as "Barnabus" who in the Bible gave generously and encouraged greatly. Jim had a passion for learning and reading and received a Master's degree in Finance at age 80. Jim is survived by his son James "Jim" Crane Lewis, Jr., his daughter-in-law, Georgia Lewis, his 6 grandchildren Wesley (30), James III (27) and his wife Jenny, Jordan (23) and his wife Amber, Blake (18), Ryan (14) and Jacob (11) as well as beloved nephews and nieces.
