James H. Morrison Obituary
February 20, 1929 - March 25, 2017 James Huston "Jim" Morrison, of Pasadena, California, died at age 88 on March 25, 2017 at home. He grew up on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, and graduated in 1947 from the McCallie School in Chattanooga, then earned a bachelor in business administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1951. During the Korean War he served as a finance officer at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama. He went to California to earn a bachelor of divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena in 1956, then a master of theology at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey in 1958. He joined the Army as a chaplain at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he made 29 parachute jumps with the 101st Airborne Division. After four years in the Army, he became associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church of San Diego and married Sarah "Sally" Voelkel in 1963. Jim became executive pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood in 1969 and in 1974 he was installed as senior pastor of Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church, a post he held until he retired in 2003. While there, he initiated a prayer and healing ministry and oversaw a special annual Christmas program featuring legendary church member Jimmy Stewart. He also served as chaplain for the Beverly Hills Police Department and enjoyed a small star turn playing a pastor at the very end of the Robin Williams movie The Birdcage. He was also a member of the board of African Enterprise since 1969 and served for decades on the Beverly Hills Meals on Wheels board, as well as chair of the editorial board of Fuller Seminary's Theology, News and Notes magazine. He was a member of the Beverly Hills Rotary Club for 43 years and served as its president in 1982-83. He is survived by Sarah, his wife of 53 years; son Jamie, daughter-in-law Amy, and grandchildren Nate, Josh, Corrie and Kaitlin Morrison, of Spokane, Washington; daughter Elaine Morrison, of Los Angeles; as well as brother Tom, sister-in-law Jerri and nephew Danny Morrison, of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Two memorial services will be held, one at Marwick Hall at Monte Vista Grove Homes at 2889 San Pasqual St., Pasadena, CA, at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 29, 2017, and the other at Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church at 505 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, CA, at 12:30pm on Sunday, April 30, 2017.
