James Jurgen Stapleton Obituary
September 11, 1917 - April 12, 2017 James Jurgen Stapleton died in Modesto, California on April 12, 2017, at the age of 99. James was born at Larchwood, Iowa on September 11, 1917 to Paul and Nellie (Frahm) Stapleton. His parental family relocated to Denison, Iowa, where James received his education in the public schools. James was outstanding at football for Denison High School, earning multiple selections at left tackle on All-Conference and All-Western Iowa teams. He declined the opportunity to play college ball, choosing to help support the family during the Great Depression. As a welder, James saw extended action in the Pacific with the 6th, 19th, and 68th U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII, including the legendary restoration under fire of Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. Relocating to Los Angeles after the war, he was married to Glenna Cook in 1947, and two sons were born to their union. He engaged in a 37-year career with what was to become Sempra Energy, retiring as field ops planner in 1984. James was active in the Westside L.A. community, volunteering service to Mar Vista Little League, the Crescent Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts, Ocean View Farms community gardens, and others. James was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, and his four siblings. He is survived by his two sons and their wives; James (Cynthia) and Chris (Laurie); three grandchildren, Sean, Heather, and James; and three great-grandchildren, Kevin, Paul, and Grant. Private services were held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica.
