Captain James Larkins Obituary
June 29, 1939 - October 31, 2016 Born June 29, 1939. Passed away October 31, 2016. James grew up in Redondo Beach, California. Resident of Palos Verdes Estates, Ca. Survived by his wife, Carole, two children, Tara (Kirk) Lantz, and Derek. Three grandchildren, Noah, Jeremiah, and Marlee. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, from 1957 -1961, as a First Lieutenant. Later he played semi-pro football. He then began his sea-faring career, taking him around the globe. He worked his way through the ranks and became an oil-tanker captain employed by Keystone Shipping Co., and later, Chevron Corporation, as a mooring master in El Segundo. He was employed by the city of Los Angeles as a port pilot for 19 years, retiring in 2009. During this time, he served two terms as the port pilot president, and two terms as its vice president, for Local 68, ILWU. He led the way overseeing multiple contract negotiations with the city of L.A. in obtaining better wages and working conditions for his fellow union brothers. He was proud to affiliate the pilots union with the ILWU. He was truly a champion of the underdog, continually helping others. He was also a member of the Sailor's Union of the Pacific, and the Masters, Mates, and Pilots Association. He served on the board of the Catholic Maritime Association, as well. He had a great passion for history, politics, sports and music. He especially enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play soccer and baseball. He was also the undisputed family champion at Jeopardy. Included in his travels were many vacation trips to Italy, his favorite destination. Memorial mass at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, San Pedro, Friday, November 18, at 10:30 A.M.
