James M. Rez Obituary
Rez, James M, age 91, of Oakland, died Oct 14, 2016 of pneumonia. Born Mar 20, 1925, reared & graduated HS in Santa Ana. In '43 was among 1st group of US Navy trainees at Occidental College, where he joined Glee Club & Alpha Tau Omega. Later enlisted as Officer Candidate at Notre Dame, rec'd commission & assigned to Atlantic, then USS Frank Knox in Pacific. Graduated from Oxy ('49) & married fellow alum Nancy Brubaker in '51. Student internship w/ City of Glendale led to 1st job as Asst Personnel Dir, then same role in Santa Ana. Returned to Glendale as Personnel Dir, Asst City Mgr & City Mgr. After 30 yrs of service in city govt - including a Masters from Pepperdine - retired in '88. Proudly called Glendale his adopted hometown & residence until moving to Oakland/Piedmont to be near family after Nancy's death in '09. In retirement was appointed to vol position on Metropolitan Water District of So Cal for 20+ yrs; Glendale honored him by dedicating a water station in his name in '09. Vol for 16 yrs at City of Hope Hosp after cancer surgery 25 yrs ago. Dedicated & generous provider as husband & father, loyal friend to many & untiring public servant whose moral compass was always true. Elder in Presby Church (USA) & mentor to many young city govt colleagues. Loved outdoors, fishing trips to Alaska & Twin Lakes, family cabin in Barton Flats/San Bernardino Mtns & faithful companion to his many dogs. Always looked forward to his next vacation to UK, Colorado or beloved Calif. An accomplished chef who enjoyed making delicious food, he was happiest when sharing stories & laughter over a meal w/ family & friends. Jim was a tireless worker, dedicated public servant, frugal w/ his earnings but unfailingly generous w/ his support. Survived by son David (Jenny) of Oakland & daughter Peggy (Jon) of Edina, MN; grandkids Alex, Izzy, Shannon, Kelly. Preceded in death by wife, sister & parents. Private memorial gathering at later date. Memorials to Guide Dogs for Blind or So Cal Lab Retriever Rescue.
