James Paul Lower Obituary
March 4, 1943 - February 10, 2016 James Paul Lower passed away unexpectedly on February 10, 2016. He was a long time resident of Laguna Beach, born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in San Marino, California. He graduated from Claremont McKenna College and received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. In 1969, Jim joined the law firm of Hanna and Morton in Los Angeles as an associate attorney, where he quickly distinguished himself and was soon promoted to partner. He represented a variety of business clients including many in the oil and gas industry. Ultimately, Jim became an expert in private foundation work and served as General Counsel for the W.M. Keck Foundation as well as a member of its Board of Directors and Legal Committee of the Board. Jim was a long time member of the California Club in Los Angeles, serving as its President for two years and as its General Counsel for several years. He also donated his time by serving as Chair of the Loyola Law School Board of Visitors, on the Board of Overseers of the Keck School of Medicine of USC and as a member of the Chair's Council for the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy at Caltech. He was active in the National Club Association and the California State Club Association. Additionally, he was a member of the Los Angeles Yacht Club and the Catalina Marineros. Above all Jim loved the outdoors, particularly the sea. His particular passion was his 40 plus foot Marconi rigged sloop, the "Kimo," in which he spent as much time cruising. He also loved surfing, swimming, rowing, skiing, fly fishing at Lake Pennask in British Columbia, listening to beautiful music and walking his dogs on the beach. He is survived by his beloved sister, Judith Lower, and his two Labs, Ezra and Belzie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Emma Lower. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Rd., Whittier, California in the Hillside Chapel (through Gate 17). Pastor Jonathan Moersch will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jim's honor to Loyola Law School or to Dr. Mark Humayun's work at USC's Keck School of Medicine.
