August 31, 2017 Janet Lorraine Beissert Gray of San Pedro died at 10:40AM on Thursday, August 31st. Born in Newark, NJ, and raised in West Orange and Stirling, NJ, she was the daughter of Albert C. Beissert, Jr., and the Rev. Peg Beissert. She was graduated from Watchung Hills Regional High School in Warren Township, NJ, and attended Virginia Intermont College. She was a Montessori teacher, society reporter for the Newark Evening News, and worked for the Metropolitan Museum and in New York City where she met her husband, H. Jan liked to say that highlights of her life included meeting Bozo the Clown when she was a child at a Thanksgiving Day parade in Newark, and, as an adult, meeting author William Saroyan in Fresno when he stopped to admire her 1966 VW convertible. She was a long time meeting planner for Academy Medical Systems in Torrance. In addition to her son Zachary and his wife Lauren, her survivors include: Granddaughters, Mallory and Mackenzie of Manhattan Beach. Brothers, Neal Beissert of Kilauea, HI, and Wayne Beissert of Rancho Mirage. Step granddaughters, Bryanna Gray of Cooper Landing, AK; Madison Gray of Sacramento, and Taylor Barje of New York. Stepchildren, Jason Gray of Sacramento and Dana Lanyo of Island Park, NY. Nephews, Chris Beissert of Torrance, Eric Beissert of Matthews, NC, Caleb Beissert of Asheville, NC, and Morgan Beissert of Charlotte, NC. Jan succumbed to complications of cancer and heart failure. She was 72. Jan liked to say her life was "blessed," and that she lived by the credo of "just love one another. It can be hard to do sometimes, but do it."
