Janet (O'Connell) Smith Obituary
June 13, 1937 - September 20, 2015 Much-loved mother, sister, aunt, friend and "Gammy," Janet passed away suddenly on September 20, 2015. Janet was born June 13, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. Her amazing artistic talents were clear at a young age. The paintings and sketches she produced throughout her life were sophisticated and strong. In the 1980's, Jan transitioned from traditional mediums, such as pastels and watercolors, to what she described as "yarn paintings." These large scale needle designs, inspirited by both Native American and personal experiences, were shown in numerous galleries. Janet was deeply loving and spiritual, and viewed every experience in life as part of a greater journey. Powerfully independent, she constantly sought out new experiences from which to learn. She loved to hike, ride her bike, read, explore and listen to the stories others wished to share. Janet called many California cities home throughout her life: Santa Monica, Westwood, Larkspur, Topanga Canyon and Sugar Pine. Janet also enjoyed residing in Ashfork, Arizona, and Costa Rica. Her final home was in Ojai, CA, where she had moved to be with her son Mark and his family. Janet is survived by sons Mark Speer (Kathy) and Bryan Smith, her brother Michael O'Connell and her treasured grandchildren, Rhett and Georgia Mae Speer. She was adored by her nieces and nephews Danny, Shari, Jimmy (Lupita), Andy (Rachel), Tommy (Claudia) and Kristi O'Connell, and her many beautiful grandnieces and grandnephews. Janet now walks with her son Kenneth Carlson Smith, who passed at age 11 in 1981. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on October 24 at the home of Eric and Mary Lloyd Wright (805-746-5957).
