Jay R. Morgenstern Obituary
May 3, 1930 - July 4, 2017 Jay died peacefully with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Joan for 66 years, father of Fran, Marc and Jill, father-in-law of Louise, grandfather of Claire, Dillon, Hope, Jonathan, Morgan and Tory, and uncle of Randi, Michael and Hillary. He was predeceased by his daughter, Fran. Born in Manhattan, he graduated from Evander Childs HS in the Bronx and NYU. In a distinguished 50-year career in music publishing, he was the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the MPA. He served on the Boards of ASCAP, the Country Music Assoc., NMPA, and the ASCAP and Henry Mancini Foundations. After 27 years at Warner/Chappell Music, he retired as its Vice President/General Manager. He began his career as an accountant for music publishers in Tin Pan Alley. Closely associated with such celebrated Broadway musicals as Fiddler on the Roof and Cabaret, he assembled a remarkable personal library of hundreds of show scores. Though he never learned to read music, he could often be heard humming along and reflecting about the composers and lyricists whom he nurtured. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 9 at 11:30am at Mount Sinai Hollywood Hills - Mount Sinai Chapel, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068. Memorial donations may be made in his name to or Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
