Jean Robinson Pickus Obituary
October 11, 1929 - September 13, 2017 After raising four children, treasuring nine grandchildren, teaching hundreds of students how to read, visiting all seven continents and seeing over 5,000 birds, Jean Robinson Pickus died on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, a month shy of her 88th birthday. Jean was born in El Paso, TX, to Simon and Dora Robinson on Oct. 11, 1929. Her family moved to Los Angeles two years later, where Jean lived the rest of her life. Jean graduated from Los Angeles High School and went on to receive a BA in English from UCLA and a Master's of Education, Reading Specialist from Loyola Marymount University. Jean continued her education until her death, attending the "Beyond the Headlines" lecture series at UCLA and participating in a Santa Monica Emeritus College class that made weekly visits to art museums throughout Southern California guided by an art historian. Jean met her life partner, Arthur Pickus, on a Beverly Hills tennis court in 1949. They were married on Aug. 27, 1950 and shared all the things important to them: raising independent and ethical children, experiencing different cultures, celebrating the Jewish holidays and valuing the natural environment for 50 years until Art's death in 2000. Jean continued her life of contributing to society after his death serving as a Guardian ad Littem advocating for foster children within the complexities of the Los Angeles court system and helping restore the Ballona freshwater marsh in Playa del Rey, CA. She also gave each of her grandchildren an experience to cherish the rest of their lives as she took them on trips to Eastern Europe, Turkey, Japan, Egypt, Croatia, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Jean truly enjoyed and appreciated sharing with her grandchildren the diverse ways people throughout the world lead their lives. She treated everyone equally, always with respect and kindness, which made her a sought-after friend. Jean remained close with a group of women, some she had known since college, celebrating birthdays together and going to the movies every Saturday night. Jean is survived by her brother, Martin Robinson; daughter Leone (Brad) Hyman; son Wayne (Margaret Dorfman) Pickus; son Glen (Kathy) Pickus; son Keith (Deirdre O'Farrell) Pickus; and grandchildren Derek, Kyle, Aaron, Hayley, Maeve, Simon, Lila, Dylan, and Claire. A memorial service for Jean's family and friends to recall her wondrous life will be held Sunday morning, Oct. 15, 2017, in Playa del Rey.
