Jeanne Florence SANDOR Obituary
November 24, 1918 - September 28, 2015 Jeanne Florence Sandor of Corona del Mar passed away peacefully in her home on September 28, surrounded by her children. She was 96 years old. Born in Lafayette, Indiana, Jeanne was the youngest of five children born to Bernard and Jenny Horwitz. Known as "sunny Jeanne" as a child, she quickly showed herself to be a superb student in everything from English to Mathematics. She graduated from Jefferson High School with high honors. Dubbed the "Blonde Ace" in the local papers, she graduated from Purdue University in Chemistry and Home Economics, one of the top five students in her class. After earning a post-graduate degree in Dietetics from the University of Michigan, she married Andrew A. Sandor, a young physician from Chicago. They moved to San Antonio, TX where Andy served as a captain in the Army. In 1944 they moved to southern California, settling in Alhambra where Andy established a medical practice. They had four children and later moved to San Marino. Jeanne was a gifted amateur organist and a great lover of classical music, especially the Baroque composer J. S. Bach. A superb crossword puzzler and a ruthless grammarian, she was known for her wit and elegance. She was active in the local Jewish community and, along with her husband and a few close friends, founded Temple Beth David, the first Reform synagogue in the San Gabriel Valley. Jeanne and Andy moved to Corona del Mar in 1970. Jeanne remained in the area after Andy's death in 1977. Over the next thirty-eight years, she was an active member and supporter of University Synagogue of Irvine, founded by her son David, his wife Geri and their friends. She was also a generous contributor to many charitable causes from cultural to humanitarian. Jeanne is survived by her four children, David Sandor (Geri) of Irvine, Richard Sandor (Sally) of Los Angeles, Jonathan Sandor (Maryann) of Corrales, New Mexico, and Marjorie Sandor (Tracy) of Corvallis, Oregon, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Jeanne shines in the memories of all who were fortunate enough to come into her warm circle, from family and friends to many others whose lives she touched. A memorial service will be held this Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m. at University Synagogue, 3400 Michelson in Irvine. In lieu of flowers, donations to University Synagogue or a are welcome.
