Jeannette Edlen Rubinyi Obituary
May 31, 1920 - December 6, 2016 Artist, writer, humanitarian, died in Los Angeles, California. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, moving to L.A. as a child, she developed a life-long interest in the arts. Writing poetry from a young age, she later became an accomplished Chinese brush painter and silversmith. Carrying her aesthetic sensibility into human interaction as well, she viewed every person as a potential work of art, envisaging and nurturing the beauty and possibility within. In addition to her formal education (B.A. and MSW at UCLA) and years as a social worker, she never stopped learning and exploring, her interests ranging from natural history, rock-hunting to studying Shakespeare in London. Spontaneous, enthusiastic, always ready for adventure, she was a delightful, thoughtful traveling companion be it on a camping trip or the road of life. Remembering the struggles of immigrant parents, her interest in and compassion for people led her to create numerous scholarships including the Benno Rubinyi Memorial Piano Scholarship in memory of her musician husband. Jeannette truly lived her life as a work of art serving as a model and inspiration for those of us who follow. She was predeceased by her parents, Morris and Annie Miasnik Edlen her brother, George Gershon Edlen, and her husband, Benno Rubinyi. Survivors include her children Lois Yellowthunder (Bob), Susan Rubinyi (Erland deceased), and Robert (Wendy) Rubinyi, her grandchildren, Arianna, Hannah, Ben, Steven, Daniel, Lara, Erik, her great-grandchildren Nicole, Kristen, Amaya, Mary Jane, and Sophia. Contributions by those who wish may be made in Jeannette's memory to the Benno Rubinyi Memorial Piano Scholarship, UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Office of Development, 2539 Schoenberg Music Building Box 957234, Los Angeles, California 90095.
