Jerry L. Pollak Obituary
April 23, 1929 - September 14, 2016 Jerry Pollak passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. He was born April 23, 1929 in Chicago, IL. Jerry was the eldest son of Emery and Helen Solomon Pollak. He earned a B.A. and B. Arch. at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Jerry married Marcia Kovenock in 1951 and together they worked in Israel until 1953, where Jerry planned the city of Arad, among other new settlements while employed by the Jewish Agency. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 in Korea and Japan, Jerry and his growing family moved to California. First working in the Planning Department of San Bernardino and designing several hillside homes, Jerry joined Gruen Associates in L.A. and NYC, where he also studied with sculptor Chaim Gross at the New School. In 1970, back in L.A., he established his own office for architecture planning and later, worked as an expert witness for attorneys. He was a frequent volunteer at the American Institute of Architects and received the National Service Award. Retiring in 2007, Jerry and Marcia traveled widely. His perpetual love of nature is reflected in photography. Jerry was preceded in death by his son, Oren (Sukey). He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marcia; son, Michael (Cathy); daughter, Shira Lee (partner, Thomas "Sky" Turney); grandsons, Joshua, Adam (Michelle), and Noah Pollak Milman; sister, Barbara (Floyd) Sanders; brother, Norman and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 18, 2016, 11:00am at Groman Eden Mortuary, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, CA 91345. Burial will follow at Eden Memorial Park. The family appreciates the care of the staff at Safe Haven at the Gardens in Van Nuys. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to the Oren Pollak Research Scholarship Fund, THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, 201 Mission St., 4th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94105.
