Joan Ahern Dektar Obituary
June 30, 1928 - June 11, 2017 Joan Ahern Dektar, a journalist who covered fashion and garden and home design for national publications including the Los Angeles Times, has died. She was married to the late Clifford Dektar, journalist and public relations executive, for 60 years. Joan was born in Wayne, Nebraska, as the youngest of four girls. At Iowa State University she majored in Journalism, with studies in Home Economics and Textiles, and was president of the Iowa Gamma chapter of Pi Beta Phi. She moved to Los Angeles in 1950 to write for The Californian, beginning a long career of writing, styling and scouting stories on fashion and garden and home design. Joan also wrote for Women's Wear Daily, the Los Angeles Times' Home Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, and Family Circle. She is survived by sons John Louis (Janet) and Daniel Clifford (Nancy Kalow), daughter Ellen (Elliott Aldrich), and seven grandchildren. Joan was a whip smart, exacting, modest, warm, and loving sister, mother, wife, and friend, from days as a girl with long brown braids and freckles in small town Nebraska to a silver haired seven-decade resident of Southern California. She is greatly missed by all who knew her.
