Joan Chapman Cerny Obituary
March 4, 1924 - November 3, 2016 Joan Chapman Cerny was born on March 4th, 1924 in Perth, Western Australia to Alfred and Lilian Chapman. Chappie, as she was fondly known, graduated Perth College, and shortly thereafter met future husband Thomas Cerny, Jr. Tom, a U.S. Naval officer, was stationed in Perth during WWII and they met at a friend's wedding. In 1946, she came to America and married Tom, at All Saints' Episcopal Church. Chappie was very active with the church and made life-long friends in her Saint Claire's prayer group. She was also active in the Assistance League and the Republican party. Many years after she renounced her Australian citizenship for naturalization purposes, much to Chappie's delight, she was granted dual citizenship (Australia/U.S.) in 2014. Chappie was beloved by all for her marvelous sense of humor, charming Australian accent, as well as her enthusiasm for life. As she often told her family, 'I am never bored and never lonely.' Chappie was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Cerny Jr., her son Thomas Chapman Cerny, and her daughter-in-law Julie Aldrich Cerny. She is survived by children Noni Menke (Michael), Ross Cerny, and Debbi Lanza (Joe); grandchildren Peter Euler, Crystal Beecher (Brian), Mary Kaech (Mark), Laura Cerny, Mark Lanza (Deby), and Lisa Hill (Nathan); great-grandchildren Amy Euler, Rose Kaech, and Alex Hill; nephew Tom Crowe and niece Judy Lawson; and a wealth of family and lifelong friends in Australia. She peacefully passed away at her home in Chatsworth, California, surrounded by her family on November 3, 2016. A memorial service for her friends and family will be held on December 10, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills.
