Joan Elizabeth (Savage) Wheeler Obituary
September 13, 1936 - December 29, 2016 Mother extraordinaire, founder and director of "Camp Grandma," BFF, Capistrano docent, sister, aunt, cousin, world traveler, photographer, collector of almost everything but especially M&M paraphernalia and teapots, high school class reunion organizer, preparer of income tax returns, the go-to person when needing advice: Joan Savage Wheeler, who reluctantly gave up her life to cancer on December 29, filled all of these roles and more. A proud native of Arizona, Joan was born in Phoenix in 1936. Following her marriage to Duane Wheeler (who passed away in 2003), Joan continued to bounce back and forth between Arizona and California. Missing her love, guidance, and, when necessary, criticisms are her children and their spouses - David Wheeler (Karen), Jodey Dugan (Mike), Libby Fulton (Terry), and 4 devoted grandchildren - Rainy and Dan Wheeler and Dana and Sam Fulton, and her brothers and spouses, John Savage (Paulette), Pat Savage (Susie), and Mike Savage (Linda). Joan felt that a passport was not a passport unless it was filled with stamps. Her adventures included bicycling in China, entering the pyramids of Egypt, cruising the Volga in Russia, plus New Zealand, most of Europe, Libya and Cuba. It was probably on one of her trips to China where she became attracted to teapots and the number in her collection at the latest count exceeds 250. A celebration of life is tentatively slated for February.
