John Benjamin De Nault Obituary
March 16, 1919 - December 19, 2016 John Benjamin De Nault, a resident of Boulder Creek, California, passed away on December 19, 2016. John was born on March 16, 1919 in Jamestown, North Dakota and graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Stanford University in 1941 and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1942. He married the love of his life, Jean Williams, June 8, 1941. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August, 1942 and served until 1946 reaching the rank of full lieutenant. During World War II he served as a supply officer on fleet oilers earning battle ribbons for all major Navy operations and two Bronze Stars for bravery. Following the war he was employed at Farmers Insurance working his way up from accountant, to auditor, to controller, and finally treasurer and Chair of the Administrative Committee. He retired from Farmers in 1965 and then served on the Board of Directors from 1965 to 1971. Following retirement from Farmers, John joined with Lou Foster to found 20th Century Insurance (now 21st Century Insurance), serving as Chairman of the Board until retiring in 1998. During his life, John was an active and successful financer who was involved with various industries ranging from trucking to golf courses to banking. He was instrumental in saving Liberty Bank's Boulder Creek branch and in the process became the controlling stockholder. John was an active and generous supporter of the Boulder Creek community, especially the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Besides his business activities, John enjoyed working on his 1/8 scale live steam railroad, swimming with turtles off the reefs of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, white-water rafting on the Rogue River, Oregon, Stanford University home football games (an almost perfect attendance following World War II), reading the Wall Street Journal, and golfing. John is survived by his loving wife, Jean, of more than 75 years; his two sons, Kenneth J. De Nault and John B. De Nault III (Jack); five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. There will be no service but at a later date there will be a Celebration of Life. Donations may be made to either the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department or the .
