John C. Hedlund Obituary
January 14, 1927 - August 11, 2016 Born of humble means in Marshalltown, Iowa on January 14, 1927, John C. Hedlund would not only go on to great personal achievements, but perhaps more importantly, he never forgot to give back to his community. As a Naval veteran of both WWII and the Korean War, with a wife, five children, and a business to run, John still found time to serve on school boards, be an elder in the Glendale Presbyterian Church and lead Printing Industry Associations. He served on many educational boards and was a past president of both Garden Grove School Board and Glendale Unified School Board. With a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Drake University, John would go on to found and own California Offset Printing. He was a past president and part owner of The Glendale News Press, the Burbank Daily Review and One Central Bank in Glendale, CA. John was awarded the "Liberty Bell Award" by the Glendale BAR Association in 1977 as well as the "Congressional Award" for Community Service in 1980. In 1978 he was selected as "Man of the Year" by the Printing Industry of Southern California and in 1984 received the National PIA Lewis Memorial Graphic Arts "Man of the Year Award". In addition to his numerous achievements, John received the highly prestigious "William Booth Award" by The Salvation Army in 2000. Later in life John and his wife Virginia moved to Newport Beach, in Orange County CA. John was very active in the Sunrise Rotary Club of Newport Beach, serving as president in 2006. As an earlier lecturer for the printing industry John would put those skills to use mentoring those in need of help through the Salvation Army, as well as serving on their Advisory Board. He was a member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Santa Ana Country Club, Newport Beach American Legion Post, and Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. John passed away peacefully on Thursday August 11th at his home in Newport Beach, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his two daughters, Diana Marshall and Janell Adams (David Adams), eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Virginia, son Stephen, and daughters Susan and Nancy.
