John Compton Tolley Obituary
June 21, 1923 - May 12, 2015 John Compton Tolley, born June 21, 1923 in Lynchburg, Tennessee, beloved husband to Angela Tolley passed away at the age of 91 on May 12, 2015 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Raised in the plush and verdant countryside of Tennessee, John Tolley (known also as John Compton as an actor) migrated in his early 20's from Tennessee to the hard concrete streets of New York to pursue a career in acting and theater. With a fierce desire to succeed and a sense of adventure that would not be intimidated, John Tolley found work in New York in the early 1950's. In 1952, he met Angela Robles, the love of his life, who he would marry in 1964 and to whom he remained dedicated for over 51 years. In the 60's, blessed with a keen mind for mathematics and a determination always to "make something out of nothing", Tolley returned to his innate country roots and began his long and hugely successful journey as a real estate developer in the Hollywood Hills and Laurel Canyon. Following his instincts, he first bought one house, borrowed against it, and later bought another. And so it began. His great sense of pride of ownership was infectious. His deep sense of feeling so connected to the very ground he walked on made all of us feel humble. His broad smile and the light in his eyes could always make you feel all was right in the world. John Compton Tolley was an uncommon man, a force of nature that one could not help but be affected by. Unpretentious, honest to a fault, his sense of humor, devotion, loyalty and love were qualities that instructed the rest of us without even making an effort. Dearly beloved by all, and most especially by Angela Tolley, John Compton Tolley will be remembered and forever missed. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister June Inman. John will be remembered by friends and family at a private memorial.
