John D. Combs Obituary
December 14, 1943 - March 10, 2017 John David Combs, aka "Dave" Combs,  began his life on December 14, 1943 in Washington, DC, to John Bryce Combs and Betty Jo Pricer.   Their family moved to Missouri in 1946 where his brother, Don Combs, was born.   Dave met his first love, Lynn A. Norton, while attending the University of Missouri in 1965.   He received a Master's in Business Administration and married her in 1966.  Together, they moved to his employment in New Jersey where he became a first-time father to Geoff Combs in 1967.   The family moved to Evanston, Illinois, to be close to Lynn's family where he became VP of Finance at the Greyhound Corporation.  The business moved their corporate offices to Phoenix, AZ, where his daughter, Debra Combs, was born in 1971.  After a divorce in 1978, Dave met and fell in love with Susan M. Nance in 1983 after hitting his head on a ceiling fan at a bar.  He married her in 1984 and the two of them moved to his dream location to live-Southern California. In 1990, Dave's third and final child, Andrew Combs, was born.  During his time in California, he was employed by McDonnell Douglas Corporation and was retained when the company was sold to the Boeing Company in 1996.    He retired in 2004 as the Managing Director of Commercial Finance of the Boeing Company.           After his second divorce, Dave enjoyed dating, traveling and socializing with the neighbors in Mission Viejo, CA. He worked on his "bucket list" including being able to drive a Nascar on the racetrack and going to concerts he missed.  After all, while married, he was able to share the world with his families-from Europe to Thailand to Hawaii and an Alaskan Cruise, amongst many local adventures. His final gift to himself for all of his hard work over the years caring for people and family was his Shelby-a 2012 Ford Mustang GT500, custom.  He loved his Shelby,  spending hours waxing and caring for the car as if a fourth child. A favorite pastime was to open the garage door and hang out with his Shelby to "people watch" in addition to his routine walks.  Everyone knew when the door was open, all were welcome, creating the "Garage Door Philosophies." Dave passed away peacefully in his home on March 10, 2017.  Everyone in the neighborhood identified with Dave as their "Dad," no matter their age or ethnic background.  A person of untold wisdom and gentleness rarely seen in today's times.  He quietly helped neighbors settle issues, tease HOA rule makers, and accept views from his diverse neighbors.  Truly, he was the Dad of an entire neighborhood.  Dave loved deeply and passionately, caring for more than we can know.  A practical, compassionate person, Dave inspired us us to reach out beyond what we know into what could be.  We know now that wherever we go, his spirit will go on through us.  The family will be honoring him in a Celebration of His Life on April 8th, 2017 from 1pm until 6pm at his home in Mission Viejo, with the garage door open, brew to share and stories to tell.  For information about the celebration, please RSVP to Debbie Goodrich, phone number 253-951-4452 or email [email protected]  They ask that in lieu of flowers or gifts, to please send donations in Dave Combs' name (Shelby number 7748)  to The Shelby Foundation at: www.shelby.com.  This great organization assists families in medical need, educational goals and for engineering grants for technical studies. Dave is survived by his sons, Geoff and Andrew, daughter Debbie, 2 grandchildren, and brother Don.
