John Edward Hornung Obituary
October 25, 1924 - August 28, 2016 John Edward Hornung, age 91, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2016 in Santa Barbara, California with family by his side, following a brief illness. He was born on October 25, 1924 in Los Angeles, California, son of the late Matthew Michael and Jane Sheedy Hornung. He graduated from Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, Ca., and attended El Camino College in Torrance. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1943 to 1946 on the USS Intrepid in the Hedron Fleet Air Wing #8. He worked at Douglas Aircraft, North American Aviation, and Rockwell. He was proud of the airplanes that he helped build. John married Ava Sims Lewelling in Macon, Georgia in 1969 and moved to her home in Sevierville, TN in 1979. John and his wife enjoyed traveling and loved life. His mother was from County Clare, Ireland. They made several trips to Europe and Ireland to visit his family and his ancestral home. They also enjoyed taking trips to Myrtle Beach to stay at their condo. John always had a love for the ponies and talked fondly about their trips to the Kentucky Derby. He also enjoyed gardening and took meticulous care of his tools and yard. Like his wife, he was active in the community and worked with many organizations such as the U.S. American Legion, VFW, Elks, Lions Club as well as others. He is survived by his son, Bill Hornung, and his wife Donna. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ava, his stepson, Joe Lewelling, his sister, Betty Radigan, and his parents, Matthew and Jane Hornung. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 3rd at 11:30 at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5835 W. Slauson Ave., Culver City, Ca.
